Your retainer smells, the branded pods cost more every time you reorder them, and you are wondering whether the cheap tablets on the next shelf do the same job.
They mostly do. The useful question is which part of the cleaning you are paying for, because the chemistry and the machine solve two different problems.
What the branded pods are actually selling
Retainer cleaning tablets are built on the same chemistry as denture tablets: sodium bicarbonate, a mild acid and an oxygen-releasing salt that lifts protein film off plastic. The retainer version is packaged smaller and priced higher.
Paying for that is a choice about convenience rather than cleaning. Anyone reordering pods monthly is paying a premium for the word on the box.
Yup tabs and ultrasonic cleaner. My retainers are a year old and still look brand new. I use tabs made for cleaning baby bottles though (bottle bright). They are even better than the kind made for dentures and retainers.

Denture tablets do the same job for a fraction of the price
Denture tablets sit on the same shelf, come in far larger boxes, and dissolve into the same oxygen-releasing solution. Plenty of people switch and notice nothing except the receipt.
Use one tablet in warm water, not hot. Fifteen to twenty minutes is enough for daily upkeep, and leaving a retainer in overnight does nothing extra except soften the plastic if the water was too warm to begin with.
Baby bottle tablets work on the same principle and are often gentler, which matters for clear plastic that scratches easily.
Seconding leaving them in water all day. I fill my ultrasonic cleaner with water and a polident tab and leave them to soak in that all day. At night when I’m brushing my teeth before bed I’ll turn on the cleaner and by the time I’m done with my routine my retainers and good to go.

An ultrasonic bath is the upgrade worth paying for
Ultrasonic cleaners move the work from chemistry to mechanics. Tiny bubbles collapse against the surface and shift film out of the grooves a brush cannot reach, which is where the cloudy look comes from.
A cheap unit and an expensive unit do roughly the same thing for a retainer. The expensive ones run quieter and hold more water.
Tablet in the water, retainer in the basket, five minutes. That combination handles almost everything people buy stronger products to fix.
Ultrasonic cleaner will change you. You'll be cleaning your retainer every day for the rest of your life, might as well invest in the best clean they can be

What ruins a retainer faster than any smell
Hot water is the quickest way to wreck a retainer. Clear plastic warps well below boiling, and a warped retainer stops fitting, which is a far more expensive problem than a cloudy one.
Toothpaste is the other common mistake. The abrasive in it is designed for enamel, and on soft plastic it leaves a field of fine scratches that hold stain and odour better than smooth plastic ever did.
Bleach, mouthwash with colour in it, and the dishwasher all belong in the same category.
- warm water, never hot
- a soft brush kept for the retainer alone
- denture or bottle tablets for the daily soak
- an ultrasonic bath if the grooves stay cloudy
This is actually a huge fear of mine with my ultrasonic cleaner. I got a $30 one from Amazon, but I will be investing in more expensive one once I’m done with my treatment and have a retainer (I’ve heard good things about Zima brand), but I always keep an eye on it because I am afraid of this happening! I hope your retainer comes in quickly 🙏🏽

Smell is usually the mouth, not the retainer
A retainer that smells within hours of a proper clean is reporting on the mouth it goes back into. Plastic has no odour of its own; everything it carries arrived from somewhere.
Mouths dry out overnight, and a dry mouth lets odour-producing bacteria work undisturbed for eight hours under a piece of plastic that holds them against the teeth. Cleaning the retainer harder does not change what happens after it goes back in.
CariSpray is an alcohol-free, fluoride-free nano-hydroxyapatite oral spray used without rinsing and without a sink, which suits the moment just before the retainer goes in. It leaves nano-hydroxyapatite on the enamel underneath for the hours the plastic is covering it.
What to buy first
A box of denture tablets and a soft brush covers almost everybody, and the box lasts months. Start there and give it two weeks before deciding anything is wrong.
If the retainer still looks cloudy in the grooves after that, the ultrasonic bath is the thing that fixes it, and it is a single purchase rather than a subscription.
Branded pods are worth buying only if the packaging is what keeps you doing it daily. Daily beats thorough every time with retainers.
Common questions
Can you use denture tablets on a retainer?
Yes. The chemistry is the same family, and a great many orthodontic patients use them for exactly this. Warm water, one tablet, fifteen to twenty minutes, then rinse the retainer before it goes back in.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner worth it for a retainer?
If the plastic stays cloudy in the grooves after soaking, yes. It reaches places a brush misses. A basic model does the job, and pairing it with a tablet is better than either on its own.
Why does my retainer smell bad straight after cleaning it?
Because the smell is coming from the mouth rather than the plastic. Overnight dryness lets odour-producing bacteria work under the retainer, and that happens again every night regardless of how the retainer was cleaned.
Can you clean a retainer with toothpaste?
Better not to. Toothpaste abrasive is sized for enamel and leaves fine scratches in soft plastic, and those scratches hold stain and odour. A soft brush with plain water, or with a drop of washing-up liquid, is kinder.
How often should a retainer be cleaned?
A quick brush under warm water every morning, and a soak once a day or every other day. Short and frequent beats a long soak once a week, because film is easier to lift before it has set.
Buy a box of denture tablets and a soft brush kept only for the retainer. That covers the chemistry and most of the mechanics for the price of a single month of pods.
Add an ultrasonic bath only if the grooves stay cloudy after two weeks of doing it daily. The machine solves a problem the tablets cannot, and nothing solves the problem of not bothering.
